Santa Barbara's grid runs perpendicular to the Pacific, with State Street climbing inland from the waterfront and parallel avenues cutting through downtown. The Santa Ynez Mountains rise abruptly to the north, their ridgeline defining the city's upper boundary, while the coast curves gently along a crescent beach anchored by the harbor and Stearns Wharf. Montecito Creek drains from the foothills through the downtown core, its path still visible in the street pattern and flood control channels.
