Santa Ana's grid runs in two competing systems—the original Mexican land grant geometry clashes with the later American township grid, visible where streets shift angles near the Santa Ana River. The river itself curves through downtown from northeast to southwest, historically prone to flooding before channelization. Fourth Street runs as the main commercial spine, with the civic center clustered around City Hall and the old Spanish plaza, while the rail line follows the river corridor south toward Long Beach.
