Peoria sits on a dramatic bend in the Illinois River, where the waterway loops nearly back on itself before flowing north toward the Mississippi. The downtown grid runs perpendicular to this curve, with Main Street climbing the bluff away from the riverfront, while the rail lines that made the city a freight hub still cut through the valley. To the east, the Pere Marquette State Park and the river's oxbow define the city's natural boundary.
