Long Beach's grid runs perpendicular to the Pacific coast, with the Queen Mary permanently docked in the harbor and the Los Angeles River forming a hard edge along the eastern boundary. Downtown rises at Civic Center, while the curved arc of the waterfront—from Alamitos Bay through Rainbow Harbor to the Long Beach Breakwater—creates the city's defining crescent. The inland portions fragment into older orthogonal neighborhoods, checkerboarded by the Long Beach Freeway running north-south through the center.
