Grand Prairie sprawls across the Blackland Prairie between the Trinity River to the east and Lake Arlington to the northwest, with Interstate 20 bisecting the city on a straight east-west line. The street grid follows a cardinal orientation, interrupted by the lake's irregular shoreline and several arterial highways—Interstate 30 curves through the southern edge while State Highway 161 runs north-south through downtown. Tradition Drive and Collins Street form the main commercial spine, anchoring what was once a railroad stop along the Fort Worth and Denver line.
