Dresden's Altstadt sits in a tight bend of the Elbe River, its medieval street grid hemmed in by water on three sides. The Elbe splits the city cleanly—the Neustadt spreads north in a rationalist grid of perpendicular streets, while the older core to the south clusters around the Frauenkirche and Zwinger Palace. The river's dramatic curve and the steep Elbhang slopes to the south frame the city's footprint into two distinct halves.
