Brownsville sits at the Rio Grande's mouth, where the river bends sharply eastward before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. The city's street grid runs perpendicular to the river, with downtown compressed between the waterfront and the Mexican border just a mile south, while the port facilities and ship channel extend northeast toward the Gulf. Highway 77 bisects the city north-south, connecting the downtown core to the newer subdivisions spreading inland across the flat Rio Grande Valley floor.
